MISSION

Anthony’s work is rooted in community building, creating meaningful connections, and impacting those through the exposure of artistic experiences and facilitated practices. He believes that through fostering meaningful connections and pouring into ones own community, we are able to build a foundation that encourages healing, strengthening bonds, and uplifting voices of those who have been silenced.

INTROSPECT

Introspect is anthony’s latest working-project, in continuation of his previous dance film, PAIN, TRAUMA, TRIUMPH, that premiered as part of Carolina performing art’s digital commons festival — developed to further investigate how deepening our awareness of mind and body creates space for discovering tools that can support emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing. INTROSPECT is a short-dance-film by Anthony and will premiere JULY 26, 2022 AT THE NASHER MUSEUM OF ART IN DURHAM, NC.

When we can truly understand how life experiences have shaped us, we become better, more empathetic people. Anthony strives to create spaces to allow opportunity to explore different spectrums of movement and emotional responses, inviting one to think beyond the movement itself. A component of this project is dedicated to educating the community and spreading awareness through facilitated movement-based practices, on the IMPORTANCE of tuning inwardS.

This project is supported by the North Carolina Arts council, a division of the department of Natural and cultural resources, and Durham arts council, local grants administrator.

PAIN, TRAUMA, TRIUMPH

Pain, Trauma, Triumph is a solo-dance film featured as part of Carolina Performing Arts Digital Commons Festival, filmed at CPA’s CURRENT ArtSpace + Studio, featuring original music score by Anthony Nelson Jr. and Joaquin Lopez. The creative process of this work was developed through the lens of beginning to understand, acknowledge, and become intensely aware of emotional growth from personal experiences, both triumphant milestones and traumas alike. Various complex emotions, thoughts, and beliefs reside within us that are rarely tapped into. This piece works to reflect one’s journeys through their own emotional spectrum. To better acknowledge and lean into our own emotional growth, we must begin to connect our inner and outer emotional experiences, to our deepest desires to be whole.
